Open Boys Knockout Soccer – Round 2

KO Soccer 1

The Open Boys Soccer team ventured to West Beach Wednesday 14 August to face off against last year’s state champions Henley High School in Round 2 of the knockout competition.

The boys got off to the perfect start, pressuring Henley into an error that resulted in an unfortunate own goal. The NIHS pressure continued throughout most of the first half before it was undone just before half time when Henley equalised to go into the break 1-1.

Archie latched onto a delightful through ball from Massimo shortly after the break to put another NIHS score on the board. From there on, it was Henley who took the upper hand as they piled on the pressure to find an equaliser. Charlie produced several outstanding saves in goals but was eventually beaten from a Henley corner late in the second half. Charlie was again in fine form to deny a last-minute penalty, taking the match to extra time.

Extra time proved to be a cagey battle with both teams opting to stand off and protect their own goal rather than push for a winner. After a serious injury paused play for an extended period, players returned to the field to play out the final minute of extra time when heartbreak ensued in the form of a late Henley goal that proved to be the decider, eliminating the boys from the competition.

Final Score
NIHS 2 – 3 HHS
