Adelaide Festival & Fringe

Yr 10 Drama 1

What an extraordinary two weeks for our Year 9  – 12 Drama students!

Students immersed themselves in an exciting array of theatre experiences across the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe, witnessing first-hand the creativity, skill and storytelling that make live theatre so powerful. Experiences like these are one of the most inspiring ways for young performers to deepen their understanding of drama, and our students embraced every moment!

The journey began for our Year 11 and 12 Drama students with a compelling production of ‘Spring Awakening’, presented by Flinders Drama Centre students and directed by NIHS old scholar Christian Hadgis in his third year of the directing course. Students were then treated to a visually striking and thought-provoking production of ‘The Cherry Orchard’, directed by acclaimed Australian director Simon Stone, whose bold contemporary interpretation brought new life to the Chekhov classic.

Year 10 students also had the fantastic opportunity to welcome renowned Commedia dell’arte specialist Andrew Crupi to the school. After enjoying a lively performance of ‘A Servant for All Masters’, students stepped into the world of traditional Italian theatre themselves, taking part in a hands-on masterclass where they explored the exaggerated movement, physical storytelling and distinctive masks of classic Commedia stock characters.

Finally, Year 9 and 10 students were swept into the high-energy world of roller derby at Windmill Theatre Company’s production of ‘Mama Does Derby’. With its moving story, live music and ever-rotating set, the performance captivated the audience and showcased the dynamic possibilities of contemporary theatre-making.

From classic theatre and bold contemporary interpretations to physical comedy and interactive workshops, students experienced a rich variety of performance styles, techniques and theatrical traditions. These experiences not only deepened their understanding of drama but also sparked fresh ideas and inspiration for their own creative work.

Congratulations to our enthusiastic Drama students for embracing every opportunity with curiosity and excitement!
