In Term 2, Week 9 the Year 12 students performed ‘Antigone: 3021’ a modern interpretation of the classic tragedy written by Sophocles. The tragedy centres on the conflict between Antigone, who defies King Creon’s edict to bury her brother Polynices, and Creon, who believes in upholding the law of the state above loyalty. Antigone’s act of civil disobedience leads to tragic consequences, as her defiance results in her arrest and eventual death.
This production was a triumph of passion, artistry and dedication by the students whose performances were both moving and thought-provoking, capturing the timeless themes of individual conscience and state law. The class opted for a bare, minimalist Brechtian inspired set rich in atmosphere with chiaroscuro lighting and powerful moving music, song, movement and often contrasting vividly colourful costumes. The students’ performances were compelling, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their roles. Overall, their hard work and dedication were evident, making this rendition of ‘Antigone’ a memorable and impressive achievement. Well done class of 2024!
