On Friday, 1 December, our Rowing Club held the 2023 Endurance Challenge which is a team competition on ergos (rowing machines) in a four-hour relay event. The winning team was determined by the distance they could row in four hours. The Endurance Challenge was a fundraising event for the Club. Donations made before the event went towards the Club’s fundraising efforts, and we greatly appreciate the support of all who have or will contribute.

The event saw some exceptional efforts, with energy draining performance that truly showed heart, determination and resilience.

  • The winning team was a group of senior boys consisting of Rayhan, Ricardo, Hyunbi, Oliver, Juan, Nickolas, Connor, Digby, and Mitchell. These boys managed to row an incredible distance of 69.6km! A new school record exceeding an already impressive 67,400km set in 2021.
  • The second place was taken by a team of Year 9 boys who managed to row 62.3km. The team consisted of Noah, Joel, Deacon, Xavier, Rohan, Bodhi, and Luca.
  • A special mention to the outstanding effort of a recent school graduate, Igor. His challenge was to row solo for four hours, taking only short breaks, and he managed to row an impressive distance of 60.4 km. This is truly a remarkable achievement!

The event was held in a friendly, fun, and competitive atmosphere and flowed into The Garden Party, hosted by the NIHS Rowing Committee.

The Central Plaza came alive, on a beautiful summer evening for The Garden Party. The perfect location and atmosphere to celebrate the hard work of the endurance challenge, announce our 2023/24 Captains of Boats and relax into the first weekend of summer. We want to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed, especially to the BBQ cookers, salad and meat providers, drink providers and servers, money managers, display setup and set down teams, and Five Eleven Distilling. A big thank you to the wonderful NIHS music students Jameerah, Jackman, Mackenzie, and Ben who provided the perfect music for the evening (and to Mrs Ormston) and to the tech department for putting together some yard games. We would also like to thank the Rowing Committee, who put their hearts and souls into these events.

We are very fortunate to have such a wonderfully supportive rowing community.
