Theory of Knowledge is a subject exploring the nature of knowledge, whether we can trust it, how we share it knowledge, and how new knowledge is produced in the different subjects students study. TOK students ask and try to answer questions such as: What counts as knowledge? Why do we seek knowledge? Who owns knowledge? How has the knowledge we assume to “know” been constructed by culture, institutions, values, personal experiences & beliefs etc.?
The TOK Exhibition allows students to showcase their exploration of a particular question about knowledge using objects from their and everyday lives. This year’s Exhibition included favourite books, records, football jerseys, ruminations on Pluto’s status as a dwarf planet, questions on how “factual and objective” History books really are, and a photograph of Mr Freak’s Sisyphus inspired tattoo.
Presenting to our Middle School IBMYP students, our IBDP Year 11s took charge in showcasing their new knowledge formed and how TOK has challenged them personally and encouraged the development of new perspectives.
In most subjects, students learn knowledge. In TOK, students learn to question knowledge. The IBDP encourages deep critical thinking, transferable to many real-world situations our young people face in this everchanging and complex world.
