On Thursday March 26, our Diploma students travelled into the city to participate in the annual Theory of Knowledge excursion. In the first session, students worked in teams to critically evaluate the concept of ‘commemoration’ and how the monuments along North Terrace reflect, shape, or contradict collective memory.
After a quick morning tea, we then visited the Art Gallery, and spent time reflecting on how knowledge is produced in the arts, and the role of ‘The Audience’. Students were asked to consider ideas such as:
- Is the context of an art work is vital to the understanding of it?
- Does it matter that ‘observation’ is a flawed tool when seeking knowledge?
- And can everything, ultimately, be brought back to numbers?
Students then had time to enjoy lunch before heading back to school. This excursion allowed students to apply the work they have been doing in their Theory of Knowledge classes to a real-world context, as well as experience some of the rich cultural experiences Adelaide has to offer.
