Sport Report – Term 2, Week 7

Get all the latest on a wet week of School Sport at NIHS!

Basketball

A strong round of results for our Boy’s Senior and Middle basketball teams. Our Senior A team unfortunately got washed out after a long trip down to Woodcroft, but our Senior B team came away with a good win, Sam putting in yet another solid performance.

Our Middle teams got the clean sweep at home against Woodcroft, opening with a nail-biting finish with our Middle C team getting up in a back-and-forth match to win 32 – 30.

Our Year 7 Red team got a convincing 51-point win over Pedare Christian College at home, while our Year 7 Blue team, also playing Pedare, had a tougher time in the away fixture.

Soccer

The weather wasn’t particularly nice for our soccer teams this week, with 4 of the 5 matches cancelled due to weather and pitch conditions. Our Year 7 team got a half of soccer in, leading 4 – 2 before the game was eventually brought to a halt due to a weather affected pitch, but we’re still counting it as a win with special recognition to Koray for his efforts in the wet conditions.

Our First XI team missed out on adding to their 5-game winning streak with a tightly contested 1 – 2 loss against Cabra Dominican College.

Table Tennis

Our Middle A and Middle B teams started Friday off strong with a couple convincing wins over Christian Brothers College to have both teams move to 4 wins, 1 loss for the competition.

Our Year 7 team travelled to Prince Alfred College but were unfortunately beaten on the day.

Badminton

Our Senior A badminton team put in a strong, team performance against St Dominic’s with a 6-0 win on Saturday, with Xantheh contributing well to the win. Our Senior B Red team had the bye this week, getting a rest and recharge before the next round of competition. The wins kept coming for our Senior B Blue team, who got the 6-0 win against Gleeson, with Emma putting in a solid effort.

Our Middle teams all battled well in tough match ups. Both Middle A Red and Blue teams suffered tough losses against St Ignatius’ and St Dominic’s, even after valiant efforts from Kalyani and Xinyu. Similar results were seen with our Middle B Red and Blue teams, with some standout performances from Sarah and Vanya.Tough losses also to our Middle C Red and Blue teams, withcoaches identifying Keya and Olivia as top performers on the day.

Netball

Our netballers had to brave some shocking conditions on Saturday morning fixtures. Our Year 9 girls narrowly missed out on a win against Cabra, going down 27 – 20.

Our Year 8B girls got on the other end of the results, walking away with a narrow win against St. Michaels with Isla putting in an inspired effort to get the team over the line.

Mixed results with our Year 8C girls, with our Yr 8 Blue team going down to Loreto College after putting in one of their stronger games for the year with Lina leading the way. Our Year 7 Red team got the chocolates recording their first win of the season against Mercedes with a 15 – 10 win with not 1, not 2 but ALL 7 players putting up a strong contribution in a real whole team performance! From all reports, there were cheers, tears and everything in between to celebrate the moment!

This perfectly sets up the NIHS Yr 8C Derby this weekend with our Red and Blue teams playing against each other!

Knockout Sports Results

It’s been a busy few weeks for our Open Knockout sports teams as they travel around Adelaide getting to represent the school at their chosen sports.

Basketball

Our Open Girls basketball team travelled to Cedar College, led by Mr. Hyland and Mr. Mauriello with some mixed performances on the day leaving Cedar with a win and a couple losses, but unfortunately couldn’t progress through to the next round. However, we’re proud of the team for their commitment and effort in leading the school in that competition!

Cross Country

On Thursday in Week 6, we had 10 brave students travel to Oakbank Racecourse against the rest of the state to compete in the Cross Country event. We had 10 students representing the school in 7 different age groups led by Mrs. Blowes and Mr. Hopkins. While all students put tough performance, our own Kai was able to finish in the Top 20 for the U16 Boys age group out of almost 70 runners. Well done, Kai!

Netball

On Tuesday, Week 8 we hosted Adelaide Botanic High School in the Open Girls Netball competition. In a game that saw a little bit of everything, our girls were able to walk away with a convincing 41 – 26 win which will see them progress to the next round of competition. Some of the players who performed well included Daisy, Alyssa, Abigail and Lara in what was a well-rounded team performance, with everyone contributing at moments throughout the match. The team was again led by Mrs. Blowes with special guest referee, Mrs. Hinge who did an amazing job being called up last minute!

Futsal

On Tuesday, 16th of June, our 11/12 girls Futsal team (consisting of primarily middle school players) played in the Division 1 Statewide Futsal Finals Tournament. Thanks to a series of brilliant goals from Lilly, Ellie, Olivia and Chloe, the team finished top of their group above Adelaide High, Gleeson and Woodville.

This meant that for the first time ever, the girls progressed to the semi-finals against Kildare. The intense game ended 1 – 1, resulting in a penalty shootout that brought back memories of the 2023 shootout between the Matildas and France. 2 spectacular saves by Mia saw the team through to the grand finals, facing off once more against Woodville. After yet another draw (this time 0 – 0), the girls participated in another penalty shootout. A further 2 saves by Mia and a final penalty by Ellie saw your Norwood International 11/12 Girls to the end as they became the Division 1 Statewide Futsal Champions.

This weekend will see the final weekend of School Sport for Term 2, as our teams and coaches take a well earnt break and come back ready to fire in Week 1, Term 3.
