Science Week 2026: Growing a Passion for Science

This year, Norwood International High School celebrated Science Week under the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Science for All”, with a week of activities designed to encourage students to explore, question and engage with the world of science.

The week began with an exciting animal encounter, giving students the opportunity to get up close to a range of fascinating animals and learn more about the science behind them. Students also had the chance to get their hands dirty through activities with the Environmental Club, helping to nurture our school garden and contribute to our green spaces.

Throughout the week, students could choose from a range of lunchtime activities. Students experimented with growing crystals, watching their creations develop and change over the course of the week, while others relaxed with a David Attenborough documentary in the lecture theatre.

Our specimen challenge gave students the opportunity to put their biology knowledge to the test by identifying preserved specimens in the biology laboratories. It was a great chance to explore some of the fascinating resources available in our science labs.

Students were also encouraged to think beyond the laboratory through the Science Ethics Challenge, where participants considered real-world ethical questions faced by scientists and engaged with students from other schools.

To finish the week, students had the opportunity to create their own terrariums, taking home a miniature ecosystem that they could continue to observe and nurture.

One of the highlights of the week was our Scientific Drawing Competition, which challenged students to combine their artistic creativity with their scientific knowledge. We were delighted with the quality and variety of entries received, showcasing students’ ability to communicate scientific ideas through detailed illustrations.

A huge thank you to all the students and staff who participated in Science Week and helped make the events such a success. From animals and plants to crystals, specimens, ecosystems and scientific ethics, the week provided something for everyone and demonstrated that science really is for all.
