IBDP Creativity and Cultural Morning Tea

In Term 1 on Wednesday 9 April, the IBDP Year 11s and 12s came together for a morning tea, which gave us all an opportunity to step away from our usual routine, dive into new cooking experiences and develop connections with each other across cohorts.

Our group embraced the “risk-taker” IB learner profile and made an effort to step out of our culinary comfort zone to engage creatively with a different culture’s cuisine. We made Pierogis, an eastern European dish of fried dumpling filled with spiced mashed potatoes and fried onions.

The table was filled with creativity from chocolate covered strawberries, cookies and crepes to fried chicken and lasagne amongst many more. Several dishes also gave us an insight into the different cultural backgrounds of our peers in DP1 and DP2.

For us Year 11 students, it was a great experience getting to know what the second year of IBDP will look like directly from the people who experienced it first-hand. Chatting with the Year 12s provided us with helpful advice about what is to come and were overall just great people to talk to. The conversations flowed easily and meeting so many new people helped us grow our “communicator” IB learner profiler.

These were some of the highlights from the Year 12s:

“I made goreng pisang a traditional Malaysian dish, which is essentially deep-fried bananas. It was a very enlightening experience and I came out a lot more knowledgeable.” – Elia

“I made Banh Phong Tom (prawn crackers), I found this experience to relate to being a risk-taker, as I got to try new types of foods. I also was happy to have this opportunity to develop my Creativity as a CAS experience.” – Nami

“I made Jumeokbap (Korean rice balls) and small chocolates, I needed to be open minded during the breakfast to try new foods and get to know the DP1s”. – Rory

Overall, the morning tea was more than just a shared meal, it was a celebration of culture, creativity, and connection.
