Development and Person Discovery through the Dyurrite Cultural Landscape of Mount Araplies.

In Term 1, Week 11, the Stage 2 Outdoor Education class embarked on an unforgettable journey across The Dyurrite Cultural Landscape in Mount Arapiles, Tooan State Park, Victoria. This immersive four-day experience provided Year 12 students with a unique opportunity to enhance their skills in safely navigating and exploring cliff environments.

Leading up to the trip, from Week 6 to Week 10, students immersed themselves in a range of planning and preparation activities to ensure their safety and enjoyment during the journey. This included developing a comprehensive menu and nutritional plan, creating extensive personal and group equipment lists, preparing climbing gear, and conducting a thorough risk assessment and management plan. Additionally, they participated in practical lessons and excursions to Morialta Conservation Park, refreshing their skills necessary for exploring cliff environments.

Mount Arapiles is a truly inspiring destination that encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones. With its breathtaking landscapes, passionate and experienced instructors, and rich stories, it offers the best rock climbing in the southern hemisphere. Each element of the experience combined to create a supportive environment for students to challenge themselves.

During the four-day excursion, students engaged in top-rope climbing at various locations, including Bushrangers Bluff (both Sunny and Shady Side) and Mitre Rock, as well as a thrilling 50+ meter abseil down the face of Melvilles Cave. Each student was guided to a key experience that tested their skills and boosted their confidence in cliff environments. They had the chance to experience multi-pitch climbing in renowned areas such as Mitre Rock or the Organ Pipes, known for their exceptional (3-star) climbs. Whether completing multi-pitch abseils or tackling challenges in a top-rope setting, each student had the opportunity to push their limits.

As the Year 12s reflect on their transformative experiences at Mount Arapiles, they recognise their development and personal growth. They are also keen to improve their planning and preparation for their next journey. Excitingly, in Week 6 of Term 2, the class will journey to the Riverland and onto the Murray River for a kayaking expedition around Chowilla Reserve.

We look forward to seeing how our students continue to grow and thrive in the outdoors!
