On Monday 27 May, our Girls AFL team took on Nurioopta and Heathfield in the opening round of the Statewide Knockout Competition. Due to the knockout nature of the competition, only one team of the three would progress through to the next round.
Picking up where they left off in 2023, the girls were exceptional in game 1, defeating last year’s, Division 2 grand finalists (Nurioopta) by 33 points despite some inaccurate kicking in front of goals. Lara was dominant in the ruck across 4 quarters whilst Polly demonstrated her class both in defence and through the midfield. Nat provided a target forward, kicking 2 goals whilst Monique looked a constant threat with her speed and power on ground level.
Final Scores
NIHS – 8.16 – 64
NHS – 4.7 – 31
The second fixture saw both visiting teams, Nurioopta and Heathfield clash as our girls watched on as Heathfield comfortably defeated Nuri to set up an entertaining prospect in the final match of the day.
Final Scores
HHS – 13.12 – 90
NHS – 5.5 – 35
The final match saw NIHS face off with Heathfield with the equation simple, win and progress to Round 2 or lose and be eliminated from the competition.
Unfortunately for the girls, it was Heathfield’s day, as they showed their poise to run away 6 goal winners in an entertaining match. Despite the loss, the girls were tremendously courageous, with no rotations off the bench and resulting tiring legs, the girls battled on bravely to never give in, typified by the efforts of Matilda, Liana and Lola. They should be extremely proud of their efforts, as we all are.
Final Scores
HHS – 13.6 – 84
NHS – 7.7 – 49
The girls now look forward to returning a stronger side in 2025.
