Stage 1 Outdoor Education Camps

St1OED Camps 7

In Terms 1 and 2, the Stage 1 Outdoor Education class participated in two camps designed to explore and connect with South Australia’s spectacular coastal environments. These immersive experiences focused on developing practical outdoor skills, resilience, and environmental appreciation through Surfing and lightweight Cycle Touring.

In Term 1, students took part in a three-day surfing camp to Berry Bay, near the Corny Point township. This location offered the perfect backdrop for students to develop their surf skills and apply safety considerations related to weather, wave conditions, and group awareness. Each day presented varied surf conditions, allowing students to challenge themselves and make consistent improvements. All students were able to experience personal success through effort, persistence, and peer support.

In Term 2, the class embarked on a three-day lightweight Cycle Touring Journey across Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula. In preparation, students developed a detailed route plan, nutritional lightweight menu, risk analysis and equipment checklist to support the self-sufficient nature of the trip. Carrying all personal gear, food, and camping equipment in pannier bags, the group cycled between scenic landmarks and remote beaches, renowned for their natural beauty. Students demonstrated excellent group cooperation, communication, and leadership throughout the journey.

With clear, sunny weather and cool nights ideal for stargazing, both camps provided opportunities for students to reflect on their connection to the natural environment and deepen their understanding of sustainable and safe outdoor activities.
