Schools MTB Championship – Thursday 9 May

MTB Mid Race 1

On Thursday 9 June, our school was represented by 24 students in the School Sport SA Mountain Bike Championships. This event has grown year on year over the last decade, and our involvement as a school continues to increase.

In some cool morning conditions before an unseasonably warm day, students were ready to go to school from 7:00am. The competition took place at the Craigburn Farm trails on two difficult cross-country courses which tested student bike handling, spatial awareness, endurance and bravery.

The morning saw our year 7 and 8 Mixed teams of Ryan (yr 8), Archie (yr 8) and Evie (yr 8) – The team rode exceptionally well over the 2-hour relay-style race, with Evie challenging herself in her first-ever MTB race, Archie providing a stable race pace and Ryan accelerating the team into the podium places. They rode away with 3rd place covering 7 laps.

The afternoon saw NIHS field 6 teams, in the 2.5 hrs relay event, 3 in the Year 9/10 boys division, 2 in the Year 11/12 Boys division and 1 in the Year 9/10 girls division.

Year 11/12 boys Digby (yr 11) and Remy (yr 11) managed 9 laps and came home in 9th place.

While Koby (yr 11), Isaac (yr 10) and Ezekial (yr 11) squeezed out 7 laps and came home in 23rd place.

The year 9/10 girls of Grace (yr 9), Serena (yr 9), Imogen (yr 9) and Willow (yr 9) rode courageously with all girls competing in their first MTB race. A few minor stacks were had but the girls came home in 4th place.

The year 9/10 boys team 3 of Connor (yr 9), Noah (yr 10), and Harrison (yr 9) managed 7 laps coming home in 48th place.

Team 2 of Kye (yr 9), Seb (yr 9), Leo (yr 9) and Jackson (yr 9) managed 8 laps coming home in 23rd place.

Team 1 of Thomas (yr 9) and Chase (yr 10) had a smashing race pumping out a whooping 11 laps over the 2.5 hours, going into the final lap Chase was less than 10sec behind the leaders (Rostrevor College) despite stitching two laps together the boys feel agonisingly short of first by less than a min. An unreal effort that saw them finish 3rd overall against some of the top MTB riders in the state.

An awesome effort from all students over the day and it was brilliant to see them represent their school proudly while cheering on their teammates and conducting themselves in a remarkable fashion.
